Dining Interview Etiquette

When beginning your career search, it is important to understand that you may face a variety of different interviews. One of the types of interviews which you may have is a dining interview. In order to nail this type of interview you will need to make sure that you are able to exhibit proper etiquette before, during and even after the meal.

It is important to recognize that even when an interview takes place in a restaurant; it is still an interview and should be treated as such. The guidelines below will help to guide you through the process of making a great impression as you proceed through this part of your career search.

Before the meal actually gets under way you need to make sure that you have turned off your cell phone. If you want to make sure that you receive a phone call following the interview, you should ensure that you do not receive any calls during the interview.

As you are waiting for the meal to arrive, be sure to pay attention to the interviewer and what they are saying. This will help you to take a more active role in the conversation. Do not be afraid to take part in the conversation, but do steer clear of subjects that may be sensitive, such as politics and religion.

Always make sure that you are aware of your manners and your body language. Your posture throughout the meal should be confident and assured. Make certain that you keep your elbows off the table and avoid slouching over your meal.

In the event that more than one person is interviewing you, wait until everyone has been seated at the table before you place the napkin in your lap, as a sign of respect and common courtesy.

When it comes time to place your order, stick with selections that are moderately priced and avoid any selection that may be dicey. If you have not previously tried that dish, now is certainly not a good time to do so. In addition, stay away from foods that may be messy and difficult to handle. Under no circumstances should you order any type of alcoholic beverage.

Be certain to exhibit common courtesy to the wait staff by saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Avoid speaking with your mouth full.

Once you are finished eating, place your knife and fort on your plate at the 4 o’clock position. Your napkin should be placed on the right side of your table setting.

Since you were invited to the meal, you will not be under any obligation to pay the bill. It would not be appropriate for you to offer to do so, but you should thank the person who invited you. Before the meeting has ended, make sure you obtain their business card.
