An Online College Search for a Teaching Degree
Each year thousands of individuals attend colleges, schools and universities as they work towards their formal degree in teaching. These students seek out degrees in early childhood, elementary, high school and special education. Many of these teaching students began their academic careers in the online or distance learning environment.
While there are currently no full teaching degree opportunities available for strictly online students, there is great availability of the required courses, special certifications and degrees that can help someone become a certified teacher.
When beginning an online college search for a school, college or university that will help a student reach their teaching goals it is a good idea to review the school’s policies and the availability of a guidance counselor or professional services office. This is because a teaching student will need to meet some fairly specific deadlines for the state they wish to teach in, and the student and their counselor should develop a good plan of action.
It is quite important for any student beginning an online college search to note their goals and needs and to compare each school to see which best suits the student’s own requirements. For example, a teaching student must take into consideration the age level they are seeking to specialize in, any additional requirements to their degree choice (such as someone working with special education individuals) and all of the deadlines for the required state tests and certifications.
Most teachers will need to spend time in their final years of college working directly in the classroom and participating in a “student teacher” program. While these vary from state to state it is critical that a student incorporate this period into their educational plan.
Many people use the convenience of the online learning environment to acquire all of the “general studies” credits that are required of all college graduates. This is a great way to take college classes when working full time and raising a family. At the end of the workday the student can simply leave work and head home to attend their classes!
Many teaching students do this as well, working in a day care or educational environment while building up the credits and coursework they will need to achieve their goals.
Currently there are some excellent opportunities in online and distance learning for some unique teaching scenarios. For example, students can become certified as adult literacy volunteers, or as tutors to adults learning to read, they can become trained as business teachers, computer teachers and many other instructional venues.
Any student performing an online college search should be sure to examine every sort of certification for teaching available. A well-developed plan of action can allow a student to earn certifications and alternative opportunities in which they can practice and employ the skills for which they are being trained.
